Defense Transition Services (DTS) assists veterans in obtaining
college degrees and certification in nursing and education. Also
known as the "Soldiers to Scholars" program, DTS works
in conjunction with the Veteran's Administration, military installations
throughout the southeast, the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs,
UCF's College of Education and the College of Health and Public
Affairs. Emphasis is placed on recruiting minorities; however, DTS
provides assistance to all veterans regardless of sex, race or religion.
Individuals accepted into the program volunteer to serve as mentors
and role models for at risk children. Through its programs DTS seeks
to increase the diversity in the field of education, help to alleviate
the nursing shortage and provide positive role models for at risk
children in the inner city.
Soldiers to Scholars offers tuition and book subsidies, as wells
as housing allowances to those participants who live in designated
housing. Computers, printers and internet access are provided in
the Soldiers to Scholars office for the participants' use. |
